Sensation Belgians is Sue Fregien & Jim Johnston and their dogs, who call a 13-acre "dog ranch" outside of Waterford WI home. We have had Belgian Tervuren since 1993, and will never be without Tervs in our lives again.

What's New

Our primary goals in breeding are to maintain excellent structure & angulation to allow our dogs to do any physical activities easily, provide dogs with strong work drive to be successful in various performance events but yet be excellent companions, improve on type to fit the Tervuren standard, and maintain the good health our dogs have enjoyed. We are also attempting to at least maintain, if not improve on, the herding capabilities and stock sense that our dogs have exhibited. So far, that has improved with each successive breeding we have done.

Our dogs have been active in many activities - conformation, obedience, tracking, herding, agility, and Schutzhund. Sensation dogs have been among the top agility dogs in the 2000's. Included in the accolades of the puppies we have produced are the first Rally-titled Terv, the only Terv to earn agility championships in 5 organizations, and one of the only VPG-3 (Schutzhund 3) titled Tervuren in Germany.

Tervuren in the US are currently undergoing a philosophical split. There are breeders who are breeding for the show ring, and their dogs have structure and drive that are suboptimal for top performance ring results. There are working Tervuren breeders whose primary goals are breeding for drive and working temperament, and their dogs cannot compete in the show ring.
We are trying to bridge these two extremes by breeding for good Tervuren type, while also striving for a strong desire to work, stable temperaments, and excellent structure to allow our dogs to not just compete, but excel in whatever venue they choose to enter. When forced to choose between the "fads and foibles" of the breed ring and the health, structure, and temperament to be good working/performance dogs, however, we will always go with the latter. We will not compromise those to win in the breed ring, which is too subjective and extreme to be a realistic method of determining the best Tervuren.

In placing puppies, we prefer homes where the dogs will be well-trained and active. The puppies we produce are primarily for performance-minded owners, as they are bred for the strong work ethic and physical structure needed for these sports. We do want to showcase the "well-balanced Tervuren" whenever possible as well, which means we love to see our pups shown in the breed ring. We do, however, realize that a good home is the most important aspect of placement, so we will evaluate each inquiry individually with regard to where our pups are best placed. We would encourage you to ask us questions about our dogs and our philosophies if you are interested in a Sensation Tervuren puppy.
